About Shaheed Memorial

Travel guide & information

The famous lines of freedom fighter Ram Prasad Bismil, “Fairs will be held every year at the funeral pyres of the martyrs; this will be the only remaining mark of those who died for the nation,” aptly reflect the spirit of the Shaheed Memorial located at Dhaniyamau. The memorial commemorates the brave freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during India's struggle against British rule. Every year on 16 August, people gather at the memorial to pay tribute to the martyrs of the region and remember their contribution to the freedom movement.

While opposing British rule, four brave sons of India—Thakur Zamindar Singh, Ram Adhar Singh, Ram Padarath Chauhan, and Ram Nihor—were shot by British forces at this place on 16 August 1942 and sacrificed their lives. Their sacrifice occupies an important place in the local history of the freedom movement in Dhaniyamau and the surrounding region. The Shaheed Memorial serves as a place where their courage, patriotism, and sacrifice are remembered and honoured.

In memory of the brave martyrs, a memorial site was established here in 1991 by Uma Nath Singh, who was serving as the state's Minister of Prisons at the time. A martyr's pillar at the memorial contains information about the lives and sacrifices of several freedom fighters associated with the region. In addition to the four martyrs who lost their lives on 16 August 1942, the memorial also records the story of other freedom fighters, including Ramanand Chauhan, who was reportedly tied to a chilbil tree in Agraura village and shot by British forces on 23 August 1942.

Today, the Shaheed Memorial at Dhaniyamau remains an important historical site preserving memories of the local freedom struggle. Visitors come to pay their respects to the martyrs and remember their contribution to India's independence movement. The annual tribute held here also helps introduce younger generations to the local history of the freedom struggle and the courage and sacrifices of the people who fought against colonial rule.
