Jhanjhari Mosque

The Jhanjhari Mosque was a historic mosque located in the Sipah locality of Jaunpur district, on the northern bank of the Gomti River. It was constructed during the reign of Ibrahim Shah Sharqi, around the period when the Atala Mosque and Khalis Mosque were being built. The Sipah locality itself was established by Ibrahim Shah Sharqi and was an important area during that period.

According to historical accounts, the area was associated with military activities and was used to accommodate soldiers as well as elephants, horses, camels, and mules. It was also considered a place associated with saints and scholars. The area therefore appears to have had religious, military, and social importance, and the Jhanjhari Mosque formed an important part of this historical setting.

The mosque was later destroyed during the reign of Sikandar Lodi. Following its destruction, a considerable quantity of stone from the mosque was reportedly reused in the construction of the Shahi Bridge. As a result, the original structure of the Jhanjhari Mosque no longer survives in its complete form. However, its historical references and surviving architectural traces remain significant for understanding the medieval history of Jaunpur.

The Jhanjhari Mosque is regarded as a beautiful example of early architectural craftsmanship. Its historical association with the Sharqi period reflects the distinctive architectural traditions and construction techniques that developed in Jaunpur during the medieval era. Today, the mosque remains an important part of Jaunpur's historical heritage and architectural history, particularly in connection with the city's medieval monuments and the development of Sharqi architecture.
